CHAPTER NINE

It’s almost four in the morning and once again the house is quiet. For the second time this evening, cops, medics and brass swarmed inside and outside my abode, taking notes, interviewing Amy, Mai, and me. The young officer bebopping to his iPod earned a broken jaw and some serious facial abrasions for his dereliction to duty. Before a uniform car whisked him away to the ER, I whispered in his ear that I was in a quandary whether to break the other side of his jaw when he heals up, or do what I can to get him fired. Maybe both. His stupidity jeopardized everyone.

It appears that after Barry shot Dan, he fled around the side of my house and then slipped in through the front door when Mai and I were out back. He failed to close it all the way, which I should not have ignored when I let in the cops and medics a short while later. He hid his big, bold self inside my guest room closet, waited there until everyone had left, and then jumped Mai and me when we were distracted. His ninja-like, cocaine-fueled attack completely caught us off guard, stunning us mentally and physically. Had he still been armed, the outcome would have been grim.

I saw the big guy without his overcoat on when they stuffed him into the backseat of a squad. He wasn’t fat and he wasn’t cut like a bodybuilder. He was just monstrously huge from a lot of years of pumping heavy iron and drinking beer. In a few hours, the drugs will wear off and he’ll awaken to a broken nose, broken ears, ripped groin and whatever else was damaged.

Right now, Mai is asleep on my sofa. Once everyone had left, the events of the evening caught up with her and she began shaking. I’ve seen it happen to cops a few dozen times, and it’s happened to me, too, most recently after both shootings. It’s a normal reaction to an abnormal event, Kari says. Mental note: Call and make an appointment for some couch time with her. My head needs some shrinking right now.

Mai and I checked ourselves over for abrasions and lumps, of which we had many, but nothing we couldn’t live with. However, the adrenaline rollercoaster ride we’ve had this evening has taken its toll on our energy. When her shaking began to diminish, I made some green tea for her and excused myself for a few minutes to go shower off the pond scum. The hot, calming drink combined with her waning adrenaline had its affect and when I came back into the living room, she had sunk into my recliner and was sleeping like an infant. I covered her with a throw from my sofa and then came into my bedroom, which is where I am now, assessing the destruction. I don’t know if I can stick the city for the brick through my living room window a couple of nights
